Course Description
This online training is provided by the Arkansas Home Visiting Network Training Institute (AHVNTI). Food insecurity is harmful to all people, but it is particularly devastating to children. Proper nutrition is critical to a child’s development. Not having enough of the right kinds of food can have serious implications for a child’s physical and mental health, academic achievement, and future success.
Working in the environment where families are most comfortable often permits home visitors to get to know families in a much more intimate way, which sets the stage for close, trusting relationships and an increased likelihood of identifying if a family is food insecure. If identified, home visitors have the perfect opportunity to connect families with needed services and programs designed to alleviate this burden.
By the end of this training, Home Visitors will be able to:
- Understand the scope of food security and what factors play a role in food insecurity
- Describe effects of food insecurity on a child’s health and well-being
- Understand how it impacts families in Arkansas
- Demonstrate increased awareness regarding common myths surrounding food insecurity
- Provide resources to families in home visiting experiencing food insecurity
